Hornbills are a bird that always fascinated me as a child..

Narcondam is a three kilometres by four kilometres island in the Andaman Sea, closer to Burma than India but considered an Indian territory and home to the world’s remaining 300 Narcondam Hornbills.

Despite being the home to the hornbills, the Indian Coast Guard proposes to build a radar facility and diesel power generation station on the island.  The plan includes a clearing forest for a new road and increased human presence on the island.

Conservation India considers the proposal to be a “serious threat faced by Narcondam Island and the endemic and endangered Narcondam Hornbill”.  Conservation India is requesting people write to the Minister of State for Environment & Forests and the IFS Member-Secretary, Standing Committee of the National Board for Wildlife to help ensure the proposal does not go ahead.
